And They Called It Puppy Love
When Althea Summers spied two-year-old terrier cross Honey at a Dogs Trust rehoming centre, she instantly knew she had to bring her home. But would Althea's six-year-old lurcher, Lola, welcome the new addition to the family?
Well, it turns out a little bit of Honey is exactly what you need to sweeten the deal. In no time, Honey and Lola became firm friends.
A Special Bond
Lola also helped Honey settle into life in a loving family. Althea, who lives in Wales, explained, "Honey would look to Lola for reassurance when something was new to her. Lola was calm by nature, so she gave Honey confidence. In return, Honey showed Lola how to play. The two of them loved nothing better than exploring the woodlands together. They were different in every way - but it turns out they needed each other, especially as their bond grew."
With an empty nest and three grown-up children, Althea had been looking for company for Lola. Fortunately, her daughter Cassie was working at Dogs Trust when Honey came up for adoption at the rehoming centre in Bridgend. She remembers that Honey was wary of some people and needed support with basic training when she first arrived. But all that was soon to change.
Cassie said, "She really turned a corner when Mum - and Lola - adopted her, and now she adores the whole family."
Honey is one of thousands of four-legged friends who have been helped by Dogs Trust to find their fur-ever home, with support from players of People's Postcode Lottery. To date, players have raised more than £20 Million for the charity - money that is helping transform the lives of dogs and owners across the country.
Althea said, "Dogs Trust gave us fantastic support with Honey before and after we brought her home. They provided us with training sessions and guidance every step of the way to enable us to give Honey the best home possible.
"Even now, after Lola is no longer with us, Honey still looks for her around the house. But the bond that Honey and I have gets stronger every day. It's incredible to see how far she's come."
