Rebuilding Lives

The Helen Bamber Foundation supports those who have experienced unspeakable cruelty including extreme violence, sexual exploitation and forced labour. 

There are 40,000 survivors of torture and extreme cruelty living in the UK and over 10,000 survivors of human trafficking. Many more victims are still trapped in situations of extreme violence, abuse and exploitation. They are often hidden in plain sight in local construction sites, nail salons and seemingly ordinary homes in ordinary streets.

Free From Fear

Escaping from torture and human trafficking is only the first step towards a life free from fear and pain. The unthinkable abuse that survivors have experienced can affect many different areas of a person's life. Repeated physical and psychological violence leaves survivors with complex injuries and mental health problems, including debilitating post-traumatic stress disorder. Survivors often live in extreme poverty and at constant risk of homelessness. The extreme vulnerability of survivors makes them an easy target for further exploitation and abuse.

With the support of People's Postcode Lottery players, the Helen Bamber Foundation is working to rebuild the lives of more than 500 of the most vulnerable people in our communities each year. The Foundation's specialist doctors and therapists help survivors manage their pain - both physical and psychological. The Foundation's legal and welfare teams ensure survivors remain safe and protected from the threat of further exploitation.

Recovering Health, Restoring Wellbeing

The Helen Bamber Foundation's wraparound service works to make sure all survivors of torture and human trafficking are safe from harm, free from exploitation and have power over their own futures. With this support, survivors can recover their health and wellbeing and establish their place in the community.

The Helen Bamber Foundation has been at the forefront of working with survivors for more than ten years and are renowned experts in the field. The Foundation uses this expertise to support institutional, practical changes in the UK and around the world.
