A tabby cat called Lucky is among the first of what's hoped will be thousands of pets to be rehomed, thanks to a new centre in Scotland supported by players of People's Postcode Lottery.

Cats Protection says its recently opened Glasgow South Homing Centre couldn't have come at a better time, as demand for its services continues to increase partly due to the cost-of-living crisis.

And it was a case of second time lucky - for Lucky - when staff at the Glasgow centre took him in.

The young cat had already been in the care of Cats Protection and although he had been rehomed, when he didn't settle, Cats Protection stepped in to help once again.

And that's when Angela Hogg spotted him on the new centre's website and was immediately smitten.

The freelance arts advisor, who lives in Rothesay, contacted the charity offering Lucky a new home and soon afterwards he joined the family.

Angela said, "He's a wonderful character and very affectionate. I knew when I saw his photo that he was very intelligent and good fun. I'm amazed at how quickly he has settled in and taken to rural island living. I have been so impressed by the work of Cats Protection and how much they care about the cats they rescue. Their work is so important given that so many precious cats need to find new loving homes."

Players of People's Postcode Lottery have been supporting the work of Cats Protection since 2018 and to date have raised more than £9.9 Million to support the costs of looking after cats like Lucky while they await their new home, including paying for food, veterinary treatments and microchipping.

The new centre in Glasgow hopes to rehome thousands of cats over the coming years and will work alongside Cats Protection's existing adoption centre in nearby Auchinloch, meaning even more homeless pets can find new owners.

Helyn Nichol, Deputy Centre Manager, said, "We're incredibly grateful to players of People's Postcode Lottery. Their support helps us ensure the future is brighter for more cats and we really can't thank them enough.

"The new centre could not have come at a better time for us. Demands on our services have been gradually increasing, with a growing waiting list of cats needing to come into care, some of which are sadly a result of the cost-of-living crisis.

"Here in Glasgow, we now have more space for homeless cats and a place where potential adopters can visit - helping us and families in the local area find truly perfect partnerships."
