Support Through Skating

Our ambassador Fiona Phillips recently visited a community sports group in Swansea which uses skateboarding to boost the confidence of young people in the area.

Fiona spent the day with CUSP Swansea to find out more about the funding they have received from players of People's Postcode Lottery.

The support has helped the group to reach more children, aged between five and sixteen, in the area and provide coaching for them at a pop-up skate park during the school holiday period.

Helping More Young People

As part of the project, CUSP works with local organisations to deliver free meals to the children as a way of combatting school holiday hunger. Set up in 2013, the group offers tuition at its indoor skate park and provides outreach community work targeting lower income groups.

Fiona said, "I just love CUSP. It's a simple idea by adults who care, using skateboards and scooters to transform young lives. Players of People's Postcode Lottery are helping a small charity in Swansea do really big things for families living in low income communities."

Kate Leonard, a CUSP skate park co-ordinator, said, "You learn a lot of things through skateboarding. Children learn independence, confidence and discipline. It's also about learning how to mingle with others and the coaches are fantastic role models too."

Ric Cartwright, Chairman of CUSP, added, "You see children help and encourage each other. You see kids who are quite shy and lack confidence come out their shell a little bit and that's a really nice feeling to see that."
