Fulfilling Jak's Dream

Fiona Phillips visited Team Jak Foundation as they opened a new centre to help families affected by cancer
Fiona Phillips met service users, including Mark Perry, at the Jak's Den centre in Livingston

People's Postcode Lottery Ambassador Fiona Phillips joined Team Jak Foundation to meet the charity as it opened a new facility.

Team Jak Foundation celebrated the recent opening of its new and improved centre in Livingston, which received £17,500 of funding thanks to players of People's Postcode Lottery. It will now be able to to support even more families who have been affected by cancer

The new centre is four times the size of the original space and has full disabled access so everyone who needs it can use it. The charity is now supporting over 160 families in the area.

Specialised Activities

Jak Trueman came up with the idea for the charity - to provide young people with cancer and their families somewhere to escape the trauma of treatment while having fun in a safe environment - while he was seriously ill with an aggressive form of cancer himself. Before he died, he tasked his mum Allison Barr, CEO of the charity, with fulfilling this dream.

The new space means that the charity can provide more specialised group and individual sessions, such as activities specifically for the siblings of young people with cancer.

Fiona visited Team Jak Foundation to find out about the service it provides. She said, "It was incredible to see what a huge support Jak's Den is for people who are going through a really difficult time. I came away feeling inspired by Allison and her drive to help people, and am so glad that the funding raised by Postcode Lottery players is helping them to support even more families."
