Sightseeing With Sightsavers

Sightsavers provides life-changing eye health projects in sub-Saharan Africa with help from our players. The organisation prevents sight loss and avoidable blindness in more than 30 of the world's poorest countries. 

Cataracts cause blindness for over 12 million people worldwide, but can be treated with a straightforward operation.

Recently, Sightsavers launched a cataract simulator which shows how someone living with cataracts might see the world around them. A choice of filters simulate how you perceive an image if you had mild, medium or severe cataracts.  

Fiona Tests The Simulator

People's Postcode Lottery Ambassador Fiona Phillips tried out the cataract simulator in London, seeing the impact which cataracts would have on views of some of the most recognisable landmarks.

Fiona said, "Walking around central London on a busy day is challenging enough sometimes, but to do that with the cataract simulator was an education for me about the difficulties that people with this condition face every day. I could barely make out some of the most famous landmarks in the city. It's great that support from players of People's Postcode Lottery is helping Sightsavers to treat this condition for people all over the world."

Sightsavers support is helping to provide essential eye health services such as cataract surgery and glasses to correct visual impairment, as well as training health workers in the region. Sightsavers are helping people in some the poorest countries in the world, like Mozambique, where 75% of blindness is treatable or preventable.
