Two neighbours in Halstead are in the money this weekend after their postcode, TN14 7EG, was drawn as the winner of Saturday's Street Prize.
Mary was one of the winners we surprised with a £30,000 cheque. She said, "Oh brilliant! That is amazing. I don't know what to do. This is different to my usual morning down at Tesco's!"
Giving Something Back
With 32% of the ticket price going to charities and good causes, our wonderful players have raised over £500 Million for charities like Maggie's Cancer Care Centres. Mary has experienced cancer herself, and one of the main reasons she signed up to play was to give something back. She said, "I thought it was a good way to support good causes. It's nice to know you're contributing to something that is beneficial to other people. I support local cancer charities, as I had it and my daughter has it, so we like to support what we can."
When asked what she would do with the winnings, Mary explained she wanted to help out a charity in The Gambia and take her daughter on holiday. She said, "Friends and I support a charity in The Gambia and we try and go over every year. We take lots of supplies out and sponsor a stall over there. I wasn't able to go last year but I can book to go again now.
"I also want to take my daughter to Florence as she's been ill, so this will pay for that. It's come at a great time."
Whilst Mary wants to give back, she also plans to keep some money aside for new windows. She said, "It's a very old house so it gets chilly and windy, so I will definitely get some double glazing. I've lived here for 30 years and I've won £30,000, so it's £1,000 for every year I've lived here!"
A neighbour of Mary's also won a £30,000 prize, but as they weren't available to receive their cheque in person, their prize money will be paid into their bank account.
Street Prize Presenter Jeff Brazier was in Halstead to meet Mary and hand over her cheque. He said, "It was lovely to meet Mary and hear about her plans for spending her prize money. It's incredibly generous of her to use the money to support causes in The Gambia and treat her daughter to a well-deserved holiday. I'm sure they'll have a great trip together and I wish them the best. Congratulations to our other winner today, too, who I was unfortunately unable to meet. I'm sure they will also enjoy the £30,000!"
Thousands Of Charities And Good Causes
With People's Postcode Lottery, 32% of the ticket price goes to charities and good causes. Our players have funded more than 7,500 good causes across Britain and around the world. To date, players have raised more than £500 Million for community projects and charitable organisations.
Today's prize is part of a draw promoted by War Child, which works hard to protect, educate and stand up for the rights of children in some of the world's worst conflict-affected areas. Over £11 Million has been raised so far thanks to our generous players. This has helped the organisation protect children when war breaks out and support communities in the long term.
Local projects also benefit thanks to player support. Grove Park Charitable Trust received £10,000 last year to provide interactive IT equipment for disabled children. That funding will ensure that all children have the opportunity to learn and increase their independence, regardless of their level of disability.
