Street Prize

Grand Slam For Merstham

27 January 2019 - RH1 3AP - Merstham - £30,000
Two the lucky Mertsham winners smiling with Matt Johnson and their fantastic cheques!

One lucky postcode in Merstham has made five neighbours very happy after being announced as today's Street Prize winner.

The win saw four of the Station Road residents, who play with the postcode RH1 3AP, land an incredible £30,000 each. The fifth winner doubled their cash to a staggering £60,000 thanks to playing with two tickets.

Retiree Reg was one of the lucky players picking up a cheque for £30,000, and for him the win is going to be life-changing. He said, "I suffer badly from arthritis and recently I haven't been able to get about, so the first thing I'm going to do is buy myself a mobility scooter so I can get my freedom back. I've had to do all my shopping online and I can't tell you how excited I am to be able to get out and go into the shops, then stop by a café on my way home and sit and watch the world go by. I also love cricket but our local club isn't the easiest to get to. When I get my scooter I'll be able to go down and watch the games with a sandwich and when I go home I'll be tired but happy!

"I'm eternally grateful for this and mentally it's made a big difference to me. I'm looking forward to life again rather than just sitting in a room all day."

Reg, who has two children and two grandchildren, is also planning to use the money to adapt his home to his needs. He said, "I'll be getting a wheelchair for the house and changing my furniture too, just so it's easier to get about. One of my good friends has also won, so we'll be celebrating with a lovely meal and maybe a glass or two of wine."

Playing with two tickets and landing the biggest prize of the day was Rita. When she pulled her cheque out of the golden envelope she became emotional. She said, "Are you sure this is for me? It's such a shock, I was only expecting a thousand pounds and that would've been great, so I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that I'd won £60,000. I'll be able to help out all my family now."

Renee was over the moon when the People's Postcode Lottery team came knocking on her door, especially as this is only her second month playing. When she saw the figure written on the cheque, Renee was astonished. She commented, "Oh my goodness, I had no idea what to expect! I feel very lucky indeed. I think I'll be spoiling my family and I know they'll all be very happy for me."

Handing over the cheques was People's Postcode Lottery Presenter Matt Johnson. He said, "I'm delighted for all our winners in Merstham, but I'm especially thrilled for Reg who will now be able to get out and about on his new mobility scooter and it's been really touching to hear how much of a massive difference this will make."

32% of the ticket price goes to charities, and so far, players of People's Postcode Lottery have raised £382 Million for good causes. This prize was part of a draw promoted by PDSA.

A number of local charities close to the winners have benefited from the support of players including YMCA East Surrey. The group was awarded £17,990 to run sports sessions for adults with a disability or long-term health condition at its new Inclusive Sports Facility.
