Champagne corks were popping in Burbage today. Four neighbours celebrated scooping incredible £30,000 cheques after their lucky postcode, SN8 3TE, was announced as a winner of our Saturday Street Prize.
Retired Chris was with his wife Jackie and their dog, a boxer called George, when he learned he'd landed the big bucks. Chris said, "I can't believe this, I never win anything and keep having to pinch myself to make sure it's real. I think I shall need to sit down and have a stiff drink to let the news of what has just happened sink in."
Chris and Jackie, who between them have six children, eighteen grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, are planning to treat themselves to a well-earned break with the windfall. Chris said, "We like to holiday in the UK as it means we can take George with us. In the past, we've really enjoyed narrowboat holidays but they're so expensive that we haven't gone on one in a while. Now we've no excuse not to get booked up! Winning this is great as it's just going to give us a bit more freedom to do what we want to do in our retirement."
Neonatal nurse Caroline was also among the Burbage residents picking up a cheque. She was joined by her mum Margaret when the People's Postcode Lottery team revealed her prize to her. She said, "I'm in a state of shock - it feels like I'm in a dream! I only signed up to play four months ago and never expected anything like this to happen.
"Myself and my husband Lee are celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary today and I couldn't have asked for a better present. I phoned him at work to let him know what's happened and he can't believe it either. I've always wanted to take my two children to Disneyworld in Florida and now it looks like I can. This just means the world to myself and my family and it's a day I won't forget in a hurry. I can't wait to celebrate!"
While the two remaining two winners couldn't be there to collect their cheque in person, their prize money will be paid directly into their bank accounts.
Street Prize Presenter Danyl Johnson was handing out the golden envelopes in Burbage. He said, "Meeting winners like Caroline and Chris and hearing the difference this will make to them is one of the best things about my job. I'm over the moon for them and their neighbours and hope they have the best time spoiling themselves with the cash!"
Charities And Good Causes Benefit
A minimum of 32% of ticket sales goes directly to charities and good causes. Players of People's Postcode Lottery have helped raise more than £438 Million to date for good causes across Great Britain and internationally.
This draw was promoted on behalf of the Royal Voluntary Service, which has received over £9.4 Million thanks to player support. The funding is enabling older people to stay active, healthy and involved in their local communities by providing them with practical help and companionship.
Local charities such as Pennyhooks Farm Trust have also benefited from your support. In 2017 it was awarded £7,429 to create conservation areas, such as ponds and orchards, around the farm that help develop the knowledge and skills of its autistic students.
