Dream Win For Aberdeen
There were celebrations galore in one pub in Aberdeen over the weekend as landlord Frankie picked up a cheque for £60,000.
Frankie scooped the incredible sum when AB10 7FB was announced as today's Street Prize winner.
Father-of-three Frankie doubled his cash prize thanks to playing with two tickets. He said, "I'm grinning from ear to ear! I had no idea what to expect, I knew I'd be getting a bit more because I've two tickets, but I thought it might be about £1,500, so to get this much is just a fantastic surprise."
With his 60th birthday coming up next month, Frankie plans to use his winnings to treat his friends to flights abroad so they can help him celebrate in the sun. He said, "I'm going to Tenerife for my birthday and I told the lads I'd treat them to flights if I won big. Now they've found out the amount I've got everyone is wanting to come, but it'll be a great laugh!
"I'd also like to take my wife Naz to Mauritius as that's where her father was from and sadly he's no longer with us, so it would be great to go and visit his homeland and see where he came from. I'll be using the rest to help out my children with buying cars and kitchens for their houses and things like that."
Frankie has been playing People's Postcode Lottery for over four years and signed up to play after a friend told him about the good causes he'd be helping to support. He continued, "The sheer amount of charities supported is great and you're helping to raise money that these organisations might not otherwise see."
People's Postcode Lottery Presenter Judie McCourt was in Aberdeen to hand over Frankie's cheque. She said, "What a fabulous early birthday present for Frankie – it doesn't get much better than winning £60,000 just before your 60th! I'm sure he'll be having a party to remember in Tenerife and I hope he has the best time celebrating with his friends and family."
With 32% of the ticket price going to charity, players of People's Postcode Lottery have now raised £382 Million for over 5,500 good causes. This prize was part of a draw promoted by WaterAid.
Tim Wainwright, WaterAid's Chief Executive, said, "Thanks to players' ongoing support, communities from Madagascar to Mali and Ethiopia to Malawi have been experiencing the ripple effect that comes from getting clean water and decent sanitation. Mothers can give birth more safely in health centres, children are healthier and have the opportunity to go to school, and parents can work to support themselves and their families – that's the water effect."
A number of local charities close to Frankie's postcode have also benefited from the funding raised by players, including Huntly ASDitude. The charity was awarded £10,171 last year to create a multi-sensory play area and relaxation garden for children and families affected by autism.
