Rhyl Gets Rich
Two lucky players in Rhyl are delighted this week after their postcode, LL18 3UE, was drawn as a winner in the Saturday Street Prize.
Mary Walker, 73, couldn't believe it when People's Postcode Lottery presenter Judie McCourt showed up at her door to present her with a £25,000 cheque.
"I'm totally shocked," she said. "I would have been over the moon with a couple of thousand."
Retired nurse Mary has quite a few family members to spoil with her win. "My son, John, is getting married next year and he and his fiancée need a lot of appliances for their new home. One of the things I'll buy them is a washing machine because I don't want him always using mine," she said. "I'll make sure my daughter Jill gets the same amount too and then some money will go to my four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren."
Although Mary is still in shock about her win, she will soon be able to celebrate. "My daughter and I are off to Spain soon," she said. "It's a really nice time to go. It's really lovely that I won when I did as it would have been my husband's birthday, I lost him two years ago."
As well as treating her family and having her holiday to look forward to, Mary has some plans on how to spoil herself. "I really love three piece suites and I'm always buying new ones," she said. "I have one at the moment that isn't even two years old but I think I'll give it to my daughter so I can get a new one now."
Mary decided to sign up to play People's Postcode Lottery to support good causes. Players have raised over £82.9 Million for charities across Britain and beyond. One local project supported by players is the Rhyl Raptors Wheelchairs Basketball Club, which was awarded funds for their community outreach project.
The club was awarded £2,000 to take their sport out into the community. This work helps to promote inclusive physical activity as a means of educating young people about the positive physical and social benefits of exercise. Additionally, it highlights how people with and without a physical impairment can play and compete together on an equal basis.
There was one other winner in the winning Rhyl postcode who won £50,000 by playing with two tickets. The player was unavailable when the team called but their winnings will be paid direct into their bank account.
This is not the first time there have been lucky winners in Rhyl. In October 2013, £320,000 was won by players in Rhyl in the very same postcode sector, LL18 3.
